Night Rating
(NR)
Facinating flying technique
A Night Rating (NR) allows the holder of a PPL(H), CPL(H) or Airline Transport Pilots License (ATPL(H)) to exercise his/her privileges during legal nighttime. Night flying opportunities in South Africa are mostly limited to areas with city lights, however many pilots enjoy the flexibility to be able to extend their day trips to land just after night fall.
The training represents a fascinating introduction to instrument flying techniques and a re-cap of the dangers of flying in low visibility. A NR is a highly recommended upgrade to a PPL(H) and essential for a CPL(H) or ATPL(H) license.

Description of our Night Rating (H)
A Night Rating allows helicopter pilots to expand their flight capabilities by operating safely and confidently during nighttime conditions. This certification authorises pilots to fly at night under visual meteorological conditions (VMC), enhancing their operational flexibility and skill set. The training includes theoretical knowledge and practical flight instruction, covering night navigation, take-offs, landings, and the use of aircraft lighting systems. By earning a Night Rating, pilots gain the expertise to manage the unique challenges of nighttime flying, such as reduced visibility and spatial awareness, while adhering to stringent safety protocols. This certification is a valuable addition for any helicopter pilot, offering increased opportunities and versatility in both professional and recreational aviation contexts.
The South African minimum requirements for Night Rating (H) training
•18 Years or older •Hold a valid PPL(H) •Fluent in English (Speak, read, write, and understand) •A valid Class I or II Aviation Medical. We will assist you with a list of Aviation doctors for your Aviation Medical appointment, if required.
Ground School Subjects: approx. 5hours
•Pass the SACAA online exam. •Complete 5 hours of Ground School.
Our Preferred Helicopters for your Night Rating (H) Training
We recommend the Robinson R44 helicopter. The Robinson model R44 is the most popular helicopter ever built. The R44 is one of the safest and most reliable helicopters ever produced. The R44 can handle up to 4 individuals: the pilot plus up to 3 passengers, depending on weight and fuel load. This helicopter allows for inexpensive rental costs, have a proven track record, and is fast, nimble, and predictable to allow for every manoeuvre to be learned fairly easily.
Pass Requirements for your Night Rating (H)
A pass mark of at least 75% is required for all your examinations. Total of 1 examination is required.
Flight Hours: 15 hours
•10 hours of Basic Instrument flying, of which no more than 5 hours are allowed to be accumulated on an approved simulator. •Approximately 5 hours night flight training, which includes a cross-country flight and simulated emergencies. •The night cross-country flight consists of at least 75 nautical miles including two landings at two different controlled airports. •Practical flight test.
